Molly Malones Huili 2010

Molly Malones Huili 2010

The Great Irish Festival

category: Events

Launched 17 March 2010 (2 years ago)

Paddies Day - it’s nothing without a healthy dollop of craic agus ceoil (fun and music, for those of us forgetting our Celtic roots), much like the dollop of mash we get atop of a good and proper stew.

The Big Day: 17th March

7am:

The Jameson St Patrick’s Day Charity Breakfast

It’s more consistent than your grand mother’s cheek pinch and as usual it’s occurring again. This year it’s even bigger and better with head chef Dave Neville serving up “a contemporary take on the traditional Irish breakfast .” So if this sounds like your cup of tea/pint of stout, then be in quick, as tickets sell out faster than an All Blacks - Munster match. It’s a 7am kick off and we’ll look after you for the morning, come in, relax and enjoy some music from our piper and harpist, with drinks on us. We’ve got games and a generous prize for the best dressed. Proceeds go to Suzanne Aubert compassion centre, so what better way to start the big day.

But don’t stop there, as the Carpenters would say “it’s only just begun.” A full complement of live music is served up next and where else but in the famous (or infamous!) Molly Malones Marquee where everyone’s Irish...even if you’re not. There are bands and dancers and great craic all day long from 1pm until the wee small hours.

Feeling peckish? Then feel free to wander up to the Redhead, where we’ve got lunch and dinner menus, plus an express Irish meal which we’ll get out to you in no time at all, so you can get back on your merry way.

The music out in the luxury of the tent pans out as follows:

1 - 3:

The Black Velvet Band

Shipped in (well, really flown in), all the way from Christchurch, for your entertainment kick-starting the tent. A must not miss!

 3 - 5:

In Like Flynn

Short and sweet, In Like Flynn take the stage for a power set of all that ceoil (music, again) we know and love! Not only will your Paddies Day be on track, I’ll be full steam ahead, if they don’t blow your head clean off.

 5 - 8:

Jacky Tar

Making a triumphant return, Jacky Tar take to the stage from 5 till 8, the pipes and whistles of these Celtic rockers will make you forget its nearly tea time.

 8 - 11:

Bootleg

Bootleg you say? Yes we respond, like a bootleg record these guys (and girl) rip out all the old favorites, like they’ve a proper vinyl, but no! It’s Live! Honest.

 11 - ....

Filthy Reel

The lads have done it! From a debut appearance Paddies Eve last year Filthy Reel have clenched top sop with their foot stomping rock and reel! Playing you through the wee hours of the 18th, so late we don’t even know when to tell them to stop. We do know you’ll still be up and having a blast though!

And as if that’s not enough for ya, remember that other bar we have? Upstairs? Yea, the music is blasting in there all night long

3 - 7:

Greg and Gary

The infamous duo, back together again for a one night exclusive, opening the evenings entertainment.

7 - 10:

King Lazy

They rock.

10 - late:

The Noodles

Wellingtons one and only

V.I.P.

Molly’s V.I.P? Then don’t miss out on the chance to join our exclusive V.I.P. area in the Blarney function room. We’ve got discounts and free platters and if you’re lucky, a commemorative Molly Malones Huili 2009 Bring Back Puck pint glass.

The Festivities: 10th - 16th March

Poetry Night In The Blarney: Tue - 7pm

Captivating tales and a poem or three, makes the Blarney Poetry evening the place to be...Featuring a well known group of Wellington literary artists.

Tiddly Idol (heats): Wed/Thur - 7pm

Forget NZ Idol it’s TIDDLY IDOL. If you think you or your group has what it takes to be crowned Tiddly Idol for 2010 then grab an entry form and join us. Even if you don't think you have what it takes come listen to some one play their spoons or rock their bodhrán for three (including final) great nights of free entertainment.

KING PUCK: Sun - 2pm

“Goats at Mollys?” you say, Yes goats! That’s what’ll be here Sunday at Molly Malones, and even better, the best dressed goat gets given a crown and a sash and the proud knowledge of being KING PUCK...oh and its owner gets Puck’s weight in Murphy’s too. So bring your goats down.

The Great Irish Quiz Night: Sun - 7pm

So great it makes Alexander’s suffix a moot point. This is the night to really pit your Irish knowledge against other teams. What year did Munster beat the All Blacks and just who was singing about their brown eyed girl?….well if you think you know the answer to those and other questions then you may just win some of the $350 in bar tabs to be won.

Tiddly Idol (final): Mon - 7pm

This is it, the Grand Final, there is nothing more grand than a final...except for a grand, and that’s exactly what our Tiddly Idol will win. 2nd and 3rd won’t go home empty handed either, so come on down and listen to some fine Irish talent.
